Ooty (Udhagamandalam)
Nilgiris · 2,240 m · 2–3 nightsColonial hill-town core, botanical gardens, Doddabetta, Ooty Lake, tea estates, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway terminus.

A Nilgiris + Palani loop that covers what we actually run — Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri and Kodaikanal — plus how to sequence them from your city.
The honest scope: the core circuit on this page covers four Tamil Nadu hill stations — Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri in the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal in the Palani range. Two ranges, one state, one coordinated logistics chain. Cross-state combos pairing Ooty with Coorg, Wayanad and Munnar are handled as dedicated 2N/3D combo pages rather than as legs of this Tamil Nadu loop. For the specific two-hill Tamil Nadu combo see the Ooty + Kodaikanal package page.
South India has a long list of hill stations across four states — Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and, at the far northern edge, Andhra Pradesh. This page's core circuit covers the four that sit inside Tamil Nadu on two adjacent ranges: Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri (the three Nilgiri hill stations) and Kodaikanal (the Palani range, reached via Coimbatore and Palani). One state, one coordinated chain, one continuous set of hairpin roads.
Cross-state hill combos — Ooty paired with Coorg (Karnataka), Wayanad (Kerala) and Munnar (Kerala) — are handled on their own dedicated 2N/3D pages. They run on a different transfer chain from the Tamil Nadu loop above, which is why we treat them as separate combos rather than as extensions of this circuit.
The four Tamil Nadu stations together give you two different ranges (the Nilgiris and the Palani hills), two different feels (tea-country hill-town versus lake-and-cliffs), and enough sequencing combinations to fill anything from a 3-day weekend to a 7-day loop.
Three of the four stations sit within an hour of each other on the Nilgiri plateau — you can base once and day-trip, or move stays across them. Kodaikanal sits on a separate range and requires a cross-Ghat transfer day.
| Station | Range | Elevation | Typical stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ooty (Udhagamandalam) | Nilgiris | 2,240 m | 2–3 nights |
| Coonoor | Nilgiris (Lower) | 1,850 m | 1–2 nights |
| Kotagiri | Nilgiris (Eastern) | 1,793 m | 1–2 nights |
| Kodaikanal | Palani Hills | 2,133 m | 2 nights |
Inter-station transfer notes. Ooty ↔ Coonoor is a 30 km / 1 hr drive, or the heritage toy-train segment. Ooty ↔ Kotagiri is 30 km / 1 hr. Coonoor ↔ Kotagiri is roughly 30 km via Aravenu. Ooty ↔ Kodaikanal is 6–7 hours via Coimbatore and Palani — this is the only long transfer in the circuit.
One tight paragraph per station — what it's known for, roughly how long people stay, and where to read more.
Colonial hill-town core, botanical gardens, Doddabetta, Ooty Lake, tea estates, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway terminus.
Quieter tea-country twin to Ooty — Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock, Highfield Tea Estate, the heritage toy-train segment from Coonoor up to Ooty.
The oldest of the three Nilgiri hill stations and the least-visited — Catherine Falls, Kodanad Viewpoint, Rangaswamy Peak, small-scale tea estates. Best base if you want quiet.
The star-shaped Kodai Lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Bryant Park, Silver Cascade, pine forests. In Tamil Nadu but on a different range — reached via Coimbatore and Palani, not from Ooty directly.
The number of nights you have is the single biggest constraint on how many hill stations you can honestly cover. Below are the four circuit shapes we quote most often — each maps to real component packages you can look at end-to-end.
Ooty + Coonoor. The shortest honest circuit — same range, one base or two, minimal transfer. Ideal from Bangalore or Coimbatore on a weekend.
Ooty + Kodaikanal. Two different ranges, one 6–7 hour cross-Ghat transfer day, open-jaw airport strategy (Coimbatore in / Madurai out). The classic South-India twin-hill combo.
Ooty + Coonoor + Kotagiri. All three Nilgiri hill stations in one loop, staying quietly across the range instead of just doing day trips. Suited to travellers who have already seen Ooty once.
Ooty + Coonoor + Kodaikanal, sometimes with Madurai as an entry-point cultural night. Two ranges, three hill stations, the temple city. The longest honest loop this page covers.
Both the Nilgiris and the Palani range share broadly the same seasonal rhythm, which is why the combo works: you don't have to pick between a good Ooty window and a good Kodaikanal window.
Which stations you should sequence, and in what order, depends on where you're starting from. The four departure cities below are the ones that account for the bulk of our multi-hill trips.
Overnight train to Coimbatore + 3-hour cab up the Nilgiris is the smoothest combo; flights to Coimbatore work for weekend escapes.
Typical circuit: 3N/4D Ooty + Coonoor is the standard weekend loop; 5N/6D adds Kodaikanal.
The classic 270 km / 6–7 hr drive via Mysuru, Bandipur and Mudumalai, then 36 hairpin bends up to Ooty.
Typical circuit: 2N/3D Ooty weekender, 4N/5D adds Coonoor, 5N/6D pairs with Mysore + Bandipur wildlife.
Closest airport and railhead to Ooty — 86 km, a 2.5–3 hour drive via Mettupalayam and the Nilgiri ghat.
Typical circuit: 2N/3D Ooty + toy-train is the fly-in-fly-out standard; 4N/5D adds Coonoor or Kodaikanal.
Temple-city entry point — best combined with Kodaikanal on the way up and Ooty at the far end.
Typical circuit: 5N/6D Madurai → Kodaikanal → Ooty is the flagship South-India loop from here.
The 4-station circuit is quoted per group per dates, but the two published component packages below give you the honest price anchor for the two most-booked shapes:
For the full multi-hill loop (adding Kotagiri or extending one leg), drop a note via the enquiry form with your dates, group size and departure city — we'll come back with a routed quote rather than a rate card.
A few other guides on this site overlap on adjacent territory — worth naming them so you land on the right one for your intent:
This page — the one you're on — is the wider planner: it exists to help you pick which of the shapes above matches your trip length and departure city.
This guide's core Tamil Nadu circuit covers four hill stations — Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri in the Nilgiris, and Kodaikanal in the Palani hills. Two ranges, one state, one coordinated logistics chain. We also operate cross-state combos pairing Ooty with Coorg (Karnataka), Wayanad (Kerala) and Munnar (Kerala) — see the dedicated combo pages linked in the packages section.
Yes — each is offered as a dedicated Ooty-paired combo rather than a leg of the 4-station Tamil Nadu loop, because the cab, hotel and routing chain is different once you cross into Kerala or Karnataka. See the Ooty + Coorg, Ooty + Wayanad and Ooty + Munnar package pages for the specific 2N/3D combos.
Yes — 4N/5D is the honest minimum for a two-range trip (Ooty + Kodaikanal). That's 2 nights in the first hill, one transfer day, and 2 nights in the second. Cross-state 2N/3D combos (Ooty + Coorg / Wayanad / Munnar) run tighter because the transfer distances differ.
In 6–7 days, yes. Ooty + Coonoor + Kotagiri work as one Nilgiris loop (one long-stay hotel plus day trips, or three shorter stays). Add 2 nights in Kodaikanal via the Ooty → Coimbatore → Palani transfer and you've covered both ranges in a single week. Below 6 days, you have to drop one.
October to March is the sweet spot for both ranges — clear mornings, tea gardens at their greenest, comfortable driving conditions on the cross-Ghat transfer day. April–May is peak summer-holiday demand (flower show in Ooty, hill escape traffic everywhere). July–August is the softest window on rates but the wettest, so build slack into the transfer day.
For a Nilgiris-only trip (Ooty / Coonoor / Kotagiri), Coimbatore (CJB) is the only sensible answer — 86 km from Ooty, closest to all three. For a two-range trip that includes Kodaikanal, Coimbatore in and Madurai out (or the reverse) is the most efficient open-jaw. For the Munnar-paired combo, Cochin (COK) is the natural exit airport at the Kerala end.
The Ooty + Kodaikanal package page is a specific bookable combo — one price, one 4N/5D itinerary, one hotel tier. This page is the wider planner: what South India hill stations we cover, how to sequence 2, 3 or 4 of them into one trip, and which combination makes sense from which departure city. Both pages link to the same underlying packages.
No — the 4-hill circuit is always quoted per group per dates, because the mix (2 nights vs 3 nights per hill, hotel tier, cab class, departure city) shifts the number materially. What we can pin is the component packages that make up the loop: the Ooty + Coonoor combo and the Ooty + Kodaikanal 4N/5D combo both have published starting prices, and the full circuit is priced by adding a Kotagiri or Coonoor leg on top.
