Ooty — Udhagamandalam on official signage — sits at about 2,240 m in the Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu, and has been the headline South Indian hill station since the British moved the Madras Presidency's summer capital here in the 1820s. Elevation and eucalyptus define the town's character: even peak-summer afternoons rarely cross the mid-20s Celsius while the plains below burn at 40°C. This is the reason Ooty exists on every South Indian family, honeymoon and long-weekend shortlist, and the reason it stays on those shortlists across generations.

Ooty is a year-round destination — there is no month when it is closed or unpleasant. The right month depends on what you want the trip to feel like:

How many days to stay
Length of stay is the second-most-common planning mistake we see. Ooty is not a one-day destination — the drive up and back alone eats a day at each end. Use this as the honest shape:
- 2 nights / 3 days: the tightest workable trip. Town core (Ooty Lake, Botanical Garden, Doddabetta) plus one outer stop. Fine for weekenders from Bangalore or Coimbatore. See Ooty in 2 Days.
- 3 nights / 4 days: the honest sweet spot for most travellers. Town core + outer belt (Pykara / Avalanche) + a Coonoor day with the toy train. See Ooty in 3 Days.

- Day trip: not recommended. The drive up and down consumes the day and you see almost nothing of what makes the Nilgiris the Nilgiris.
How to reach Ooty
Ooty has one arrival gateway used by everyone regardless of origin city: Coimbatore. From there it is either road (via Mettupalayam) or the toy train up the Nilgiris. The specifics per city:

Getting around
Ooty's sights are spread across a hilly grid 5–25 km apart. Two realities decide how you move:
- Private cab is the default. Shared transport doesn't cover the sightseeing circuit efficiently and hairpin driving is not what you want to be doing on a holiday. Full rate card: Ooty car rental rates.
- Toy train is worth booking. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is UNESCO-listed and one of the trip's genuine highlights. About 150 first-class seats per day on the Mettupalayam → Ooty stretch — book 30–60 days ahead. See the Toy Train product page and the booking how-to.
- Walk the town core. The Ooty market, Charing Cross and stays around the Botanical Garden are walkable — you only need a cab for sightseeing days.
Where to stay
Ooty stays fall into five honest bands — budget guesthouse, comfort mid-range, boutique / heritage, luxury resort, and ultra-premium (glamping, pool villas, colonial bungalows). The right band is a function of trip type, not spend:
- Families & first-timers: comfort or mid-range near the town core (walkable evenings, easy cab pickup).
- Couples & honeymooners: boutique or luxury on the outer belt (privacy, estate views, slower pace). Coonoor bungalows are the strongest honeymoon base.
- Groups & corporate: mid-range or luxury resorts with common areas and in-house F&B.

Ooty + the nearby hills
Ooty is the anchor, but the Nilgiris are a cluster. The two towns you will keep hearing about are Coonoor (19 km, tea estates, quieter) and Kotagiri (28 km, oldest of the three, quietest of all).
Lower (~1,850 m), warmer, greener, dominated by working tea estates. The natural pair with Ooty for 4–5 night trips.

How do I reach Ooty?+
Nearest airport is Coimbatore (CJB), about 90 km / 3 hours by road. Nearest broad-gauge railhead is Mettupalayam, about 47 km — also the starting station of the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train up to Ooty. From Bangalore it is a 6–7 hr drive via Mysuru–Bandipur; from Chennai an overnight train to Coimbatore + cab; from Hyderabad flight + Coimbatore cab is the smoothest combination.
Is the toy train worth booking?+
Yes — it is genuinely one of the trip's highlights, not a tourist add-on. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is UNESCO-listed and only about 150 first-class seats run daily on the Mettupalayam → Ooty stretch. Book 30–60 days ahead. The Coonoor → Ooty segment is easier to secure and just as scenic.
Do I need a cab in Ooty?+
For sightseeing, yes — Ooty's spots are 5–25 km apart across a hilly grid, and shared transport doesn't cover the full circuit efficiently. A private cab for the sightseeing days is standard; for the town-core evening you can walk.
Is Ooty good for families and kids?+
